For the 2026/27 season of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, the concept of “(de)sacralizing” serves as a guiding thread that reexamines the shifting boundaries between the sacred and the profane in opera. This idea highlights how opera has historically embodied powerful rituals, myths, and belief systems, while also revealing its capacity to question, subvert, and reinterpret them. By tracing this tension, the season explores how such transformative energy continues to run through the art form, connecting old traditions with contemporary perspectives and resonating with the cultural and social concerns of today.
